Quote #2 Due on Monday - 10/14

Read the following quotation from the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part –Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.  In a complete and well supported paragraph express what the excerpt means in the context of the independent reading you have completed in class.  Use specific evidence from both the book and one independent reading article to support your response.

Quote #2
Due on Monday, 10/14

"Arnold," she said one day after school, "I hate this little town. It's so small, too small. Everything about it is small. The people here have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever."

"What do you want to do?" I asked.

"I want to leave as soon as I can. I think I was born with a suitcase."

Yeah, she talked like that. All big and goofy and dramatic. I wanted to make fun of her, but she was just so earnest. (p. 111)

  2. What this excerpt means is that the character wants something different then what she is surrounded by. She wants to explore and she has always had that passion or drive to get away and he has felt that way since she was born and that is what she means when she says " I want to leave as soon as I can. I think I was born with a suitcase." Not everyone has the same hopes, dreams, and goals. The life that seems just fine for everyone else is not quite satisfying for this character. She feels that maybe the people are just living a life that isn't full of anything special or anything worth living for and staying there would not help them accomplish anything as if it was a repetitive lifestyle for everyone. The other people might think it was ridiculous because of how accustom they have become to living in that way or probably don't have any high hopes of leaving and doing great things in life. Arnold even thought this girl was bring a tad outrageous and silly for thinking this way he shows that he thinks she is when he says " Yeah, she talked like that. All big and goofy and dramatic. I wanted to make fun of her, but she was so earnest". So this girl has this deep desire to escape this simple place for a more exciting life that would be completely different and Arnold thought it was dramatic of her to even imagine such thing realizing she was being very serious he held back his joke he wanted to express to her.

born with a suitcase.. the expresion itself speaks without words. it means you were born without a permanent place or destination .. meaning you were born with a dream .. to accomplish and will go through different accountabilities to achieve that structure in life

He is living in the reservation with his poor family and is fed up of being poor and being looked down upon. He has hope and begins to realize that in order to pursue happiness, he must make a drastic change. In the excerpt abouve, while Junior is speaking to his sister that has moveed to Montana she sasy " I hte this little town. Its to so small, too small. Everything about it is smll. His sister Mary has found joy and is very excited about her adventourse life. After Junior was sitting down in class and his textbook was passed out to him, he gets furiouse. He realizes that the textbook he was using is the same textbook that his mother used when she was in high school. Outraged, he threw the book and Bang! it hit the teacher in his nose. As a punishment Junior received an in home suspension and while sitting down in his front porch his teacher Mr. P visited. His teacher gave Junior a speech that he was not expecting, and on page 43 Mr. P says " You wont give up. You cant give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you you refuse to give up." Mr. P was explaining to Junior that the reason why he threw the book was because he was outraged at the fact that his school does not get new books and no one cares about the rezervation. Mr. P realizes that this is because Junior has hope and that he must leave the reservation and go somewhere else with his hope because if he chooses to stay then the hope will fade away and go to waste.

  6. In the "Absolute True DIary of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie Junior experiences fear and spends time contemplating the things he is facing due to the changes in his life. For the most part of Junior's life he has been on the Reservation, doing nothing more then what was expected of him. Though when a teacher approaches him after an incident when he thaws a book and breaks the teachers nose, Mr. P (teacher) ensures him that he has the potential and the capability to do great things in life, but none of those things will come true of he stays on the Reservation. With that insight Junior knows that it is time to move forward in life, though it is not easy. In Reference and agreement to the excerpt You can't do anything by staying in the same place all your life. It becomes a tireless cycle that's hard to break. Like the ongoing epidemic of completing school. Never the less in the excerpt, penelope says "I want to leave as soon as I can, I think I was born with a suit case". (pg 111) To be born with a suitcase is a statement that is debatable. One might say that to be born with a suit case means that someone is always ready to go, always prepared and has the potential and capability to carry all the things that life has to offer both the good and the bad. Everyone is born with a suitcase whether a person decides to pack that up and go forward with life or leave it home untouched is up to the individual. However in both Junior's and Penelope"s case a suitcase is something they are born with and something they cannot live without.

  7. There are many ways you can define the saying " I think I was born with a suitcase." It can mean you are ready to handle what life may throw at you or can achieve something by going elsewhere than where you are. This applies to Junior and Penelope because they both have something planned to achieve something big in life but they have to leave where they are because they both have big dreams they want to accomplish. Penelope's feelings about her town is similar to Junior's feelings about the rez. Junior believes that there is no hope on the rez and his math teacher Mr.P also believes that, leaving the reservation will lead him to and Penelope's believes that her town has very little dreams and she wants to leave her town to achieve her dreams as well.

  8. The following quote from the book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" shows how Penelope wants to leave her small town, where everyone does the same thing, live the same way, and all are afraid to be different and pursue their dreams. Penelope says she was "born with a suitcase" which means she was born ready to face obstacles in her life wether their good or bad. Penelope and Junior share similar feelings when it comes to their future, with a little motivation from Mr.P Junior made his first move in order to pursue his dreams which was leave the rez. Penelope has to take her first step too which is to leave her "small town" if she wants to fufill her big dreams!. The Irj's also show how some Native Americans were "born with a suitcase" just like Penelope they were born ready to go , ambitious, and with potential to go on in life and pursue their dreams big or small.

  9. I think i was born with a suitcase is saying that u always had a dream or future ahead of u and a great one and u should never let that dream go and just believe in yourself, he probably wants to be a lawyer or someone really famous or something but if u think u were born with a suitcase u should follow your dream and not stop till u reach that goal or dream of yours not everybody thinks they were born with a suitcase but i think everybody is born with a suitcase because everybody has dreams and goals so they shouldn't give up on their goals till they completed it

  10. In the book " The Absolute diary of a part time Indian" written by Sherman Alexie the quote "i was born with a suitcase in my hand" said by Penelope means that she was born with different ideas on how she viewed the world. She saw things different from the other indians and wanted different things. when she said everything here is small, they're dreams etc she meant that they have no dreams no future or hope. her and junior have a similar way in which they view things, which is to become something in life and leave the rez.

  11. Everybody loves to be home, to be where they feel they belong, it could be with family, friends, loved ones and people with similar belief or interests. As long as its worth been called home it’s the best place to be. There are things that can disqualify a place from been called a home, for some its when home stand as an obstacle between themselves and their dreams and for others its when home doesn’t meet the expectations of what they dreamed home to be. At this point a person deem it worthy to take action into their own hands either by leaving home for good, by leaving till they find something to write home about, by leaving till they achieve their aim and desires or staying to turn home to what they want or dream it to be. A sample of this is the mother from the video 30 DAYS, she is a graduate in her home but her home doesn’t have the employment she aimed towards achieving in life, she decides to act to this by leaving home to search for a job that meet her standards. Another is Dickie from the article WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE ONLY INDIANS where the cause and effects of alcohol on the Indian Reservation are discussed. Dickie loved his home very much but the rate at which alcohol abuse was rising stood as an obstacle between him and the love he has for his home. Dickie decides to act to this by staying to try to turn the Reservation to what he dreams it to be. The article states, “ he and his then wife Alma bought an old house and tried to… turn it to a home where homeless alcoholics could stay...” when the Reservation wasn’t meeting Dickie’s expectation of what a home should be. He made it his objective to change his home for the better. Furthermore, in the book THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART TIME INDIAN when Arnold and Penelope were having a conversation, Penelope said, “I hate the little town… small dreams…I want to leave as soon as I can,” In this case Penelope didn’t see home as just an obstacle but also somewhere she doesn’t belong and her views give her reasons to believe she was born to leave, born to search for a place she can call home.
Home has different meanings to everyone and if it isn’t what a person would love it to be they take whatever actions they deem necessary to make it what they want it to be. It could be leaving to find the place that feels more like home, it could be changing home to a better place, it all depend on the person, how much they are willing to sacrifice, what kind of step they are willing to take to be in the place they feel they belong. The place that’s worth been called HOME.

  12. According to the excerpt from the book "The Absolute True Diary Of A Part Time-Indian" there are people that are born and raised in a wealthy and successful family; but there are also people who aren't. Junior feels like he is being raised in a family that is not as good as other. "He was the loser Indian father of a loser Indian son living in a world built for winners" (pg 55). This shows that Junior feels like he is a loser that is in a world built for people that are unlike him. Also Junior feels like like he is growing up in a world where succeeding is necessary to be accepted in the world. Junior believes that a non-existing life is much better than his real life. "I guess a fake life inside a cartoon is a lot better than his real life" (pg 23). This shows that Junior feels like his life is not as good as cartoon life is. Residents living in reservations feel like their life isn't good enough.

  13. n the book " The Absolute diary of a part time Indian" written by Sherman Alexie the quote "i was born with a suitcase in my hand" said by Penelope  means that she was born to travel or explore new ideas instead exploring the same thing. However the qoute also means that she sees things differently and observe things differently.

  14. According to the expert from “The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian” the quote “I think I was born with a suitcase” may explain that Penelope, believes she is supposed to leave her town to explore new places. An example that supports this idea is in the document “Why Are Indian Reservations So Poor? A Look At The Bottom 1%” it explains how “People usually point to alcoholism, corruption or school-dropout rates, not to mention the long distances to jobs and the dusty undeveloped land that doesn’t seem good for growing much.” These kind of conditions can make a Native American leave his land, possibly something similar is happening to Penelope. On pages 111 or 112 or 113 (I don’t have the book with me Mr. Irons soo im trying to remember my memory.) Penelope explains that people dream small in the town. Only dreaming to marry each other and live together forever. This may also explain, Penelope`s choice of wanting to leave the town. The quote being “I think I was born with a suitcase” may be Penelope`s way of saying, I would like to leave this place and explore the world.

  15. Many peoples future can depend not only on that certain individual but on the people around them (like the support they get) and the situations in which they are placed. In the excerpt given from "The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" Penelope and Arnold) Junior were conversing "Arnold," she said one day after school, "I hate this little town.
(p. 111) I think this means that both Junior and Penelope have big dreams that they wish to fulfill and that they are eager to make come true but the people around them may not be so supportive because they may have had dreams that didn't come true, so they had ended up wasting their time on something that wouldn't become real. Also both Penelope and Junior aren't the most wealthy people so they were placed in a situation that is very hard to get out of. In the article "Somethings He Did", an obituary written about Roxy Gordon Roxy didn't fulfill all his dreams, he only took advantage of the little things given straight to him. He didn't try to reach the big dreams and goals. And because he didn't get to fulfill those big dreams he stayed what was given to him, he ended up not reaching for anything and had ended up being like majority of Indians on the reservation, an alcoholic.

  17. The following quote from the book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" written by Sherman Alexie, shows how everyone wants to explore the unknown to them. This quote shows of how Penelope wants to leave her "small town " because she has her own thoughts of how the lifestyle in the towns people repeat. The same also applies to Junior (Arnold) because he also wants to leave the rez because of the way he sees the rez to be. This quote is basically showing how everyone has their own perspectives of where they call "home" and their dreams of leaving and going to a bigger place. For Penelope, her town is a small place where everything is small, small dreams and small ideas. She wants to leave this small town with small hope and explore the rest of the world. For Arnold, and many other Indians living on reservations; such as the people living on reservations in our IRJ "Life on the rez", what Penelope says may not apply to her only, but they also think the same of their rez. In a way, what is Penelope is saying is also how Indians feel on the reservations.

  18. According to the excerpt from the Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the quote, " I think I was born with a suitcase" explains Penelope's believe that she was born for something better. The quote is also expressing Penelope's view, she is an open minded girl that feels like she has no limitations, unlike the people on her town. Now the quote it self can apply to juniors situation, as a Native of American teen living in the Rez. According to the article, Why are Indian Rez so Poor? Some of the reasons why the natives have no other choice but to leave are because, "makes it hard for Native of Americans to establish credit and borrow money to improve their homes, because they can't use the land as collateral-and investing in something you don't own, makes little to no sense." The poor opportunities that are being provided on the Rez, makes the teenagers want to leave in hopes to be better, like Junior. Junior also feels like he was born to be tree than a poor boy that lives on the Rez.

  19. In the book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part –Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie shows how people want to be surrounded by those they love. Sometimes who they want to be with might not always bring them happiness. Its up to them to decide if they want to move on or stay were they are and be miserable. In the book Penelope says "I want to leave as soon as I can. I think I was born with a suitcase"(pg.111). This quote means that she wants to explore whats beyond were she lives. She wants to get out of were she is and socialize with people from other areas and pursue her dreams. She doesn't want to stay in one community and go through the same stuff her parents did. She knows that she was born with more then what her home provides and its up to her to find what else life has to offer her. In the article from our IRJ "Stop the shaming and blaming"it states how teenage pregnancy is viewed to the native American people. In the article it says "I was appalled to learn this week that a 15 year old Shantella Hicks of Gallup, New Mexico, was kicked out of Wingdale Elementary for being pregnant". This shows that in certain native areas teen pregnancy is sinful if your not married. In other areas outside of there native residence if your young and pregnant they help you not make you feel guilt. Also they teach others in school how to prevent from getting pregnant at a young age which isn't provided in these native schools. That's why leaving the rez and exploring whats beyond them is better. So later on you can come back and teach the people of your home town all the great knowledge you have gained. That's why what Penelope is saying is what most off the up coming generation on the rez want to do is leave and explore and make a difference.

  20. According to the excerpt from the book" The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian", Penelope wants to leave her town, and believes that she is meant to explore the world. On page 111 of the book, Penelope says" I hate this little town. It's so small, too small. Everything about it is small. The people here have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever", meaning that everything and every one in her town is the same, and that she does not want to be like any of them. In the book Penelope also mentions " I want to leave as soon as I can. I think I was born with a suitcase", meaning that she doesn't want to be in her town anymore, and that she knows that she is meant to be on the move, exploring the world. Both Junior and Penelope have a similar dream which is to leave their homes and get better futures for themselves. Penelope wants to leave her home town in order to find a better and more productive future for herself, and Junior wants to leave the Rez in order to find hope, and a better future for himself as well.

  21. In the excerpt above from the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part –Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Junior talks to Penelope who wants to leave her small town as soon as she can. She said she "was born with a suitcase." Junior can see how earnest she is. The meaning behind this excerpt is that Penelope, like Junior with the reservation, doesn't want to stay in her little town and continue the cycle. The cycle of living in her small town and not living out her dream. She wants to move and go do bigger and better things. For example in the excerpt she said "I hate this little town. It's so small, too small. Everything about it is small. The people here have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever." This quote shows she doesn't want to be stuck there doing the same things as the people around her are doing. She doesn't want to be stuck in the cycle. Another example of this not wanting to be in a cycle would be in a reading I did in class called Stop The Shaming and Blaming Of 'Teen Pregnancy' In Indian Country by Jessica Danfort. The reading is about teen pregnancy in the reservations and how the young girls get treated bad because they are pregnant. The article states "But this widespread shaming and blaming of young people who become pregnant—particularly in areas where sex education and reproductive health information are not readily available or happening at all—has GOT TO STOP." This quote shows ,just like Penelope and Junior , the cycle needs to stop fro there to be better change. Better change not only for Native Americans but and race that wants to change.

  22. In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part –Time Indian junior is a boy on the Reservation who know how's to survive. His whole life as an survival expert. In the book he talks about the rules of fighting on the reservation junior know what is going to happen to him and why it happened what to look for and what time of day to look for it who to stay away from and who to be close to. In the article The Absence Of Native American power the author that is being interviewed so he knows what life is like on the reservation and how America portrays Indians in a totally disrespectful and ancient way. He says Indians are only relevant when they are being talked about from 100 years ago. The author also says I know more about being white then you know about being Indian. He says that because he has grown up in a reservation so he know and hears about white people while they don't even pay attention about Indians. Expert: having or involving authoritative knowledge. Both examples show knowledge on there life experiences and there religions.

  24. In the Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Penelope and Junior think that the people in their area have small dreams and little opportunity. When Penelope says that she was 'born with a suitcase', the premise of what she's saying is that she was born to do much better things, or born with dreams already in her mind; a mind set to do great things rather than living in this small town with limits. A quote in the book was said by Gordy that was very similar to what Penelope and Junior thought, " Well, life is a constant struggle between being an individual, and being a member of the community.' Being a member of said community refers to everyone in their town with no opportunity and small dreams, its hard for Penelope and Junior to fit in if they have hope, and much bigger ideas in their man. And that is being an individual. In the article, 'Drinking Behavior and Sources of Alcohol: Differences Between Native American and White Youths', they show different patterns show how alcohol is when it comes to Native Americans and White Youths. For Native Americans, its because of a big array of problems that they go to it, and because its a general thing in their culture. For the Whites, its a complete opposite, they access it different than the Native Americans do. A quote says, 'More Native American Youths, had consumed alcohol in their lifetime, consumed alcohol in the past 30 days, and engaged in episodic drinking in the past 30 days than White Youths.' This seems to be a part of the community of Native Americans, too. Overall, being a part of the community means thinking all the same, while being your own individual can lead to bigger things.

  25. The quote by Sherman Alexie expresses the idea that Penelope is different from everyone else around. Penelope no longer wants to be part of the “little town” with “small ideas” and “small dreams” and so she expresses that by speaking to Arnold and saying, "I hate this little town. It's so small, too small. Everything about it is small. The people here have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever." When she tells Arnold these things all he has to ask is what she wants to do and Penelope’s immediate response is "I want to leave as soon as I can. I think I was born with a suitcase." When she says that she thinks she was born with a suitcase she is implying that she feels as though she never really belonged. She never fit in the way she feels she should. Even though she is beautiful, intelligent and popular she still does not enjoy her life the way she wishes that she could be. It is quite ironic that Penelope, the pretty, smart, popular, white girl, is complaining to the poor, unpopular, Indian boy. It was not all the time that an Indian boy got the opportunity to listen to a white girl complain, in fact, it was not all the time that an Indian boy even got the opportunity to have a conversation with a white girl. According to the text “What the Hell They’re Only Indian,” Indians were treated very unfairly by the government which was composed mainly of white men. One of the very gruesome lines in the text explains the horrifying things that Indians had to go through when the government separated them from the rest of society. The line gets very into detail about the Indian children being beaten with leather belts and being locked in the dark closets for hours. “Beaten with leather belts and locked in dark closets for hours, two or three generations of Indian children were pushed put of these schools and onto the reservations or streets totally confused about who they were and what life expected of them” is the exact line from “What the Hell They’re Only Indians” that explains exactly what the Indian children were being put through. Both texts get very into detail about the relationship between the Indian people and white/Caucasian people, but the way that they interpret the relationships is distinctively different.

  26. In the excerpt above from the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part –Time Indian by Sherman Alexie show how both Penelope and Junior, don't want to folllow everyone our them. Junior didn't want to be in the Rez, so he decided to leave and do something different, and go to a white school instead of the one in the Rez. Penelope said she was born with a suitcase. She means that she wants to travel and do something different in her life and doesn't want to stay in her small town and get married to someone she already knows and live with them in that small town. She wants to be free and follow her dreams and do what she knows is best for her to do. She wants to break the chaines and started something new and it will show show that she isn't like everyone else. In my other book Escape from Paradise, to teens show how they don't want to be like everyone else in Paradie. Espcaily when thet aren't even aloowed to date because it is crazy on how Calab hurt Maggie and Maggie fell for him. They wanted to get away from their home and start knew and forget the past or become drug adcits like a few people do. They didn't want to get married like everyone did, go to college there. They want to be free like Penelope does. Being stuck in one place that you already know, anfd how everyone there did what most people did, isn't what people like to do. They like to be different and be there own person and do what they know its them.

  28. The exerpt from (pg.111) the book, Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie" expresses the desire for one character, Penelope, to travel + explore the outside world. What she's saying in the exerpt is that people don't reach high enough to achieve the greatest. You have to do something you've never done to get something you've never had. You have to chase you're dreams if you want if you want to achieve them. The people she (Penelope) is surrounded by have small dreams. They don't try hard enough to achieve big. They have small ideas. They don't want anything new. They don't try to achieve anything "out of reach". Penelope states she wants to leave as soon as possible. She wants to achieve life on the outside world. She was born with a suitcase: A suitcase represents traveling and success. She wants to explore. As if that suitcase is her ticket/pass to something great/ to achieve something greater. She was born with hope.

  29. According to the excerpt from the book, "The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie, Junior's sister, Penelope, knows that in the reservations, you can have hope, but making the things you hope come true, is hard if you stay in the rez. When Penelope says: "I hate this little town. Its so small. Everything about it is small. The people have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever." She's telling her brother how tired and overwhelmed she is from seeing everybody in the reservations just marrying each other, having kids, and live a life full of tears because of the poverty that they live in. For everyone in the reservations this is a continuous cycle. Their grandparents did it, their parents did it, they did it, and eventually their children will do it too! Penelope and Junior want to be the exception. They want to show people living in the rez that dreams can come true. That it shouldn't be forbidden to dream too high. That if u want something, you have to go with your hope in search for what you want and dream of. The rez does not have many opportunities to make your dreams come true. Like in the article, "What the Hell, They're only Indians", Dickie tried to create a home where homeless alcoholics could be rehabilitated. But this dream did not come true because there is not any agencies and programs to help him support his cause. This was tragic because he wanted to help people with drinking problem.

  30. In the book AIG Penelope is an expert at knowing what she wants. She knows what she wants to do in the future and how she is going to get there. Penelope wants to be different she does not want to stay in such a small town and she does not want to feel like she has to be there she wants to explore the world. The the article what the hell they're only Indians Tim Giago explains how many Indians suffer from alcoholism how many Indians give up and turn to alcohol and many kids start to drink at a young age he explains how an old classmate of his messed up his whole life by drinking and that drinking only was passed down generation by generation and messed up the young ones life's. Being an expert is when you have the knowledge of something or knowing exactly what to do and how to do it they both show that Penelope shows that she knows exactly what she wants to do in her future and Tim tells us how alcoholism is a huge problem in reservations the both show there expertise in there explanations.

  31. i believe this quote is saying that arnold was born with a suitcase means that he was born to travel and not to adapt to one place......also could mean that he wants a better life and does not want to live in poverty. he also could state that he does not want to be there knowing that he could make it in life if he tries hard and goes to places that have more aportunities.......so he wants to leave the rez for a better way of life.

  32. "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie states how there is a little girl in the reservation. She is looking forward to more than what she has. Instead of looking at everyones lifestyle she expects more of herself. When she says "I think I was born with a suitcase" she's saying she was born ready to get somewhere far in life and thats she's always ready for whatever is coming for her. Her way of thinking is very cool because eve though everybody's lifestyle where she lives is the same she's planning hers differently. But first of all her first plan is to get out of where she lives to move forward in life.

  33. The excerpt is trying to convey the message that the phrase "born with a suitcase.", means in this case, that people are more inclined to travel and experience other things and ideas. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior's friend Penelope lives in a small town in Reardan "I hate this little town. It's so small, too small. Everything about it is small. The people here have small ideas. Small dreams. They all want to marry each other and live here forever... I want to leave as soon as I can." (pg 111.) She is tired of seeing the same things. And eventually when you see the same things, you get tired of being in that place. Especially people "born with a suitcase". Sherman Alexie, the author was described in an interview as someone "... Who left the city, living in between and traveling across bounderies both real and imagined." (Bill Moyers interview) Sherman Alexie's description perfect describes what the excerpt is trying to say. It is saying that being born with a suitcase or a traveler means to go beyond what has been done. What is real or imaginary.

  35. The excerpt is showing how a girl is not happy with where she currently lives at and wants to get out. She thinks this place is too small and everyone has small ideas. She also saids how she thinks she was born with a suitcase which means she was born ready for success and ready to travel. This excerpt reminds me of the song "reservation blues" by Jim Boyd. In this song the man is singing about how living on the reservation is stressful because its like you really dont have any choice there you have to do the same things over and over see the same people over and over and hear the same ideas over and over.

  36. I agree with Chris, this excerpt is showing how the girl isn't satisfied where she lives and she just wants to get out of there. Everyone around her wants to live there life there, start families, get married but she wants to leave. " I think I was born with a suitcase" means that she's ready to go anywhere. She's ready to just move away and start a new life.

  37. i think that no matter if you have a stupid dream or not you can achieve into making it come true by believing in yourself and doing everything you can to keep moving forward no matter how insecure you get and no high hopes for yourself so this quote means that anything can happen as long AS U KEEP trying just like penelope felt while she was talking to junior

  38. According to the expert from “The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian” the quote “I think I was born with a suitcase” means that Penelope feels like she was born with a great deal of expectations , expectations that she doesn't honestly want to exceed. Penelope wants to explore the world and do what makes her happy. On (page 111) Arnold tells Penelope "Well, come on, it's kind of hard to take you seriously when you're talking about the Great wall of China and Egypt and stuff. Those aren't real dreams. They're not real." Shows that Arnold doesn't know of expanding your mind to try new things because he was raised in a box called the Rez and never thought outside of it . Farther down on (page 113) Arnold thinks to himself "And Indian boys weren't suppose to dream like that. And white girls from small town weren't suppose to dream big, either." Tells me the reader that not only the people on the Rez cant live or even dream of doing something so much bigger than living on that Rez but even the white girl from a small town couldn't either, all things they were told by there towns . In Melvin "Dickie" "Life on the Rez ", Melvin had problems drinking and wanted to help other with there issues but it was nearly impossible no one cared to stop drinking . He says "There are some people who want to get out of the Rez but feel there is no opportunities to leave the Rez " This also shows people dreaming about getting out but restraining themselves because they feel as though its impossible .

  39. The girl from "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian", is tired with the way her life is right now. She wants to experience new things and see how the world operates. In How to Write the Great American-Indian Novel by Sherman Alexie, the narrator states, "Everybody is a half-breed struggling to learn more about his/her horse culture. In both situations people are trying to discover themselves and let go of what is holding them back.

  41. the person got a reality check and realised that life on the reservation will bring her absolutely no where. their atre limited jobs on the rez. you are sourounded by people that really dont care or want to be better in life they are stuck in their state. if you lesave the rez your life will be better if you work for good things and never give up. you shouldnt throw away your culture of completely seperate yourself from the rez but u must move a way for a while to expiereince new things and better yourself

  42. Being born with an suitcase can mean many things but in this according to this expert when peneolpe says " I want to leave this place, I think I was born with an suitcase" I believe she mean she was meant to explore more than she's been handed. Everyone in her town wants to do the same thing and ends up doing the same thing with their life but wants to pushes to envelope. In peneolpe knows in her heart her life goals and dream are not meant to live the same life that her family and friends has. An I think thats the same with junior because thats the reason he left the Rez because he was also "born with a suitcase"
