  1. I chose the question why are people in the ghetto destined for failure? i chose this question because id like to know why are ghetto people always failing why are they so different. by reading the book 'got to know that it is because of their environment. they children in the ghetto grow up around so much negativity and harsh living conditions that they stop caring about being something good in life they accept their condition and build their life around the ghetto. "school ain't shit" said by a little boy selling drugs on the corner. he was so young and gave up on life already his parents donyt care so why should he mentality.

    3. Sup Ash,
i find your question very interesting because it can work as a counter argument for my question. My question is " how do they still have hope". They're , i wont say failure but less fortunate than others because as you said they're environment but they also have hope because they're trying to get out of the community they're in. Your question is good though. :)

  2. the question i chose to follow as we read this book "what defines the ghetto?". This question is a very broad question and i feel that their are multiple answers to it that is why i chose this question. The book will constantly answer it and has already gave me a few aspects of what defines the ghetto. The question interest me because it can have lots of answers to it and the book will answer it through almost every page of it.

  3. The question that I chose to follow as we read the book Our America is “What do these children consider hope?” I chose to follow this question because I am interested as to what these children that live in the Ida B. Wells Projects consider to be hope. I am interested in this question because every child may have a different type of hope, considering the fact that they all do live in the same situation, but may not have a certain person to encourage them to do better in their lives. The fact that all these children have to live in a place that they continue to compare to the Iraq war throughout the book, and still manage to call it home is very intriguing to me. These children may not all have hope for the future, but some of them dream to accomplish something, and become someone. The children living in the “Ghetto” are growing up in an environment where they don’t know if they’ll wake up in the morning because of all the dangers that their neighborhood has. Therefore, it is hard to know what these children consider hope, or if they even have hope at all.

    2. Dear Stephanie,

Your question about hope it interesting. I am interested in the beautiful hope that these children show as well. I think I really relate to that idea, because I live in the Bronx, and I see all kinds of problems all the time. There are drugs and violence and poverty and sickness around me all the time. I am surrounded by injustice, but I still have a lot of hope. I love my community because of the love I see around me and because of the sense of community in my building. In my building, people know each other and care about each other, and I don't think that really happens in other places.

I am also interested in your response because of the videos we are watching. I see a lot of ways that African Americans that were full of hope even when life was so difficult. Even though life was full of injustice, their music, food and culture were full of hope. People ran away no matter the danger, hoping for freedom.

  4. The question I chose for the book "Our America" was "why do people still have hope/pride in their community even though they know what's happening". i chose this because though many people have given up, Lloyd and LeAlan havent. And I would like to know why and how they have not given up.Maybe its because of their families, teachers or maybe its something else.

    1. Dear Jennifer,

I find your question to be very interesting, I wonder the same thing while reading this book why are LeAlan and Lloyd not giving up on hope but other kids have giving up on hope?. I think that while reading the book "Our America" you will be finding many reasons on why kids are giving on hope while others like LeAlan and Lloyd are not. Overall i find your question to be a well supported question.

    2. Dear Jennifer T,

In response to the question you chose; I'd like to further in detail know why you chose this questions. For example, what part of the book made you think of this question? Why this question?

For me, I think your question is quite interesting over all. The reason I chose your question is because it matches what I thought while reading this book.
The reason why I thought is because LeAlan and Lloyd both express the hardships they have at home and outside with the community. An example would be; how Llyod was brought up by his two older sisters due to his mother dying and his father becoming a huge drinker.

  5. In the book Our America the are many challenges these characters face so I chose a question that I would like to find an answer to "Why do people still have hope after all the obstacles they face?". I chose this question because in the book the kids that live in the Ghetto struggle to live to see the next day. Living in the Ghetto is like living in Vietnam during the war because theirs shooting almost everyday. Kids have to live in the homes hearing gun shots, people being abused and living amongst gang members. The two kids who face challenges are LeAlan and Lloyd they live in the Ghetto and go through these problems every single day. LeAlan's mother Tootchie says "I hope you end up with no drugs well educated. And whatever you do with your life do the best [...]". His mother loves her kids and doesn't want to see them end up in gangs but she wants them to prosper in life accomplish great things. His mother hasn't lost hope she gained more by seeing that her son can accomplish anything in life if he wishes to. Within this book I hope to find more answers to my question because the living in the Ghetto and having hope isn't always an easy task.

  6. The question I came up with and chose to follow through out the book "Our America" was "why do people do things that they know will lead them into bad situations?"
I chose this question because it caught my attention while reading along with the audio we listened to in class, with the boys interviewing many of the people living around them in the ghetto. Many of the interviewees do things which they know is bad and will impact not only them but the people surrounding that individual. This interests me because there could be many answers to this question depending on the person and what they have been through. It also interests me because instead of those people trying to "succeed" and get out of the ghetto they're just playing their role as another bad part of it and as a failure in the ghetto.

  7. The question I choose to follow as we read the book Our America is "Can things really change for the better one step at a time?" I picked this question because like in the book Our America, i've seen bad neighborhoods. These neighborhoods don't really change. If they do change they get worse. I wanna follow this as we read because I wanna see if there's a change. I wanna see the little steps, if any, that leads it to get better or worse. I also wanna see if it goes the same way with the people in Our America. I wanna see if they change. I want to see if they better themselves or give up. After all, I think after following the change in the book I will better understand the bad neighborhoods we have today because they all started in similar ways.

I agree with things you wrote because there are many bad neighborhoods today. Your question makes think that these neighborhood in the book "Our America", has either little hope or none at all. It makes me want to keep reading to see how the people in the neighborhood would either change or become even worse than they were before. I'm truly looking forward to finding out.

  8. DOES THE PEOPLE IN THE GHETTO HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON THEIR LIFES CIRCUMSTANCES? This question is inspired by the idea that everyone seems to share a similar view of “the ghetto” as being a place of the condemned, where the people are hopeless, rotten, and lack the qualities of a civilized responsible person. More so, there’s the curiosity to find out if this view is a pace the society sets and expect the people in the ghetto to follow or what the people in the ghetto feel its what is expected of them and they feel they must abide with, regardless of whether or not its what they desire or is it what they chose, what they themselves desired to represent?
Having this question in mind while reading the book Our America will to help better understand what Le'Alan and Lloyd are trying to tell and express about their day to day life and experiences in the ghetto as well as what they are trying to do to change and make it better for themselves.

  10. The question that I chose to follow as we read Our America is what is the impact on violence in the community ? and why do people choose to stay in the ghetto and not leave?
I Chose these questions because I want to know why people dont leave the ghetto and start a better life in a well non violent environment .however I choose these questions because as we read our america LeAlan and Lloyd was talking about all the violence going on and how they had to just sleep through it at night and this interest me because I wonder why dont people get together to try and make a change in the community instead of just letting it get worse to the point where theres nothing you can do about it and everyone loses hope and start to wonder will they ever survive through the ghetto and will things ever get better or will utit just stay the same

  11. The question that I chose for the book we are reading "Our America" is why are kids living in the ghetto losing hope so fast? One reason on why this question interest me is because I find it interesting on why kids living in the ghetto are not having hope for a better life while some kids like LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman are still having hope for a better life. Another reason on why this question interest me is because I find it interesting that most kids in the ghetto are not going through difficult situations which leads them to do the wrong thing like sell drugs.

i find your question really interesting. i think kids in the ghetto are losing hope fast due to parents not having faith in them or there parents crushing there dreams. it can also be because of problems they face in there homes that makes them lose hope.

  12. The question I chose was "is the life of people defined by their community?".The main reason why i chose this question was because it is a question i asked often asked myself in the past . I could relate to most of what is happening in this book but honestly in does not intrest me becuase i know how that type of life is lived . So my question has already been answered by lealan's sister . Lealan said she was good girl but after she became friends with a group of girls she changed for the worse . This shows me that her community defined her which answered my question

    1. Wah Gwan Michael,
I agree with your question "is the life of people defined by their community" I feel that someone's surrounding whether its the community or friends will have an affect on their life.It may be a positive or a negative trait. I also believe as humans we adapt to new environment so its easily to be influenced by others. This question is interesting to me because I also wonder why are people so "Easily" effected by others. But then again I also believe people shouldn't let the behavior of others become a problem of their own.

    2. Dear Michael Hamilton,
The question you choose is similar to mine and is very interesting, because i too have also wondered if the limitations your community has, will shape the person you become. Like in the book Our America, LeAlan and his friend see what the community, in which they live in, is doing to the kids. But their observations for me does however, make me question if we are asking the correct question. Is it really the community that is doing or changing the kids? Or is it the kids that are changing the community? Like LeAlans grandmother, who observed throughout the years, the change in their community, so have I. My community has industrially improved but not morally, so what does this mean for the question? Do you think we are questioning the correct factor of the big picture?

  13. The question that I chose to follow while we read Our America is, "Do people consider the Ghetto their home, or is it just a place for living? In other words is asking, if people that live in the Ghetto feel like that is where they belong, and are suppose to be. I chose That question because I find it interesting that the term Ghetto historically speaking was used to refer to the Jewish concentration camps at one point in time, in Germany. The camps were a complete isolation from society, the Ghetto of that time was another way of killing an ethnic group. In the book Our America the authors create a paradox of the Ghetto when they keep referring to it as their "home", yet at the same time compare it to "living in Vietnam." This paradox intrigued my curiosity, because in reality did the people from the Ghetto chose where they want to live or is it just chosen for them? One of the authors takes ownership of the Ghetto when he says, "a bum walking down the street. We're walking through the Ghetto. Our neighborhood (36)." The quote makes me wonder if he really does feel like that is where he belongs. However later, on the same page he refers to living in the Ghetto as, "I live in Vietnam, so what you think I'm gonna be, if I live in it and they just went and visited? Living around here is depressing! (36)" This comparison made me wonder if in other words, he feels like his people were put in the Ghetto to be isolated and slowly killed like the Jewish people. Living in the Ghetto is hard and "depressing", but is it where they feel they belong?

    1. Dear Cindy,
The question you have chosen is interesting to me. The fact that you are interested in knowing if people consider the “Ghetto” their home, or just a place for living is fascinating. I believe that throughout the book, you will find many responses to this question. Many of the kids in the book don’t know any other place besides the “Ghetto”, therefore a possible answer to your question is that the “Ghetto” is considered a home to those kids. The "Ghetto" is not considered a home to all of the kids living there but, they have no other place to live. Overall, you have chosen a very interesting question to follow throughout the reading of the book Our America because of the many different answers you will be able to find.

  14. In the novel "Our America" by LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman the authors talked about the life and consequences of being an African American. My question that arose while reading the book is "How do African American kids still have hope despite having to act like adults?" I chose this question because i'm moved and developed a high level of respect for these kids because with all the things they face they still got high hopes for the future, of becoming somebody. They want to leave the projects and have a good job instead of doing drugs because they're tired of the life they're living. They have to make a day-to-day decision of whether to go to school or sell drugs at the corner, they hear and witness deaths of family members and friends and they witness shoot outs frequently in the projects. This question interests me because i want to know more of how and why do these kids still have hope for the future.

Were in the book can you find out if these kids living in the Ghetto still have hope? Your question seems very interesting to me because it relates to my question as well. Your respect towards these kids is it because they live in a violence structured community everday because, its more like living in a war zone then at a nieghborhood were you feel safe? Overall your question is well thought of but you just need to support it with more evidence.

  15. As we read, 'Our America', ive came up with a million questions. The one in which I have chosen to follow through with-I do not quite remember lol. But it was indeed distinct from the other questions I came up with. The main focus in this question was a comparison between the "ghetto" and a war-zone. What interests me about this question is the thought of a connection between growing up in the ghetto and maintaining life in a war-zone. In the book, "Our America" two boys share they're everyday/normal life stories of what its like growing up in the ghetto. Its for one, dangerous. Gunshots outside you're window, killings of many people relative to you, struggling... especially in big families. Trying to provide for you're family. The boys don't live in very good neighborhoods. Its not safe, especially for kids they're age. So I wanted to draw an analytical question composing the struggle living in the ghetto and life in a war-zone because I believe their is a strong comparison between the two.

  16. While reading "Our America" by LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newmen the question that keep repeating into my head as we read was "Is normal for children living in the ghetto to give up on hope" It seem to me everyone expect for the author them self already knew the life they were destine for them at such an young age. I chose and was curious about this topic/question because we all have known some of the brightest and successful people have came up from living in the ghetto and to me living in those circumstances should want a person to strive for better not only for them self but also their and community. Why did these young individuals felt life was not worth pursing big dream.

  18. When reading "Our America" by LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman, the question that came into my mind when thinking about this book, was, what causes a person living in the ghetto to change for the worst? This was chosen because during the tapes we heard, the boys kept speaking to people who has drinken alcohol, sold drugs, and dropped out of school or end up not caring about school. Is there something in the ghetto community that causes them to do this? The possible answer based on reading so far has been that peer pressure could become a big thing. In the book, LeAlan approached a friend of his who had stopped coming out of school. He asked his friend why he stopped, and his friend simply replied with, "school ain't shit, you're not learning shit, so what?" He practically has come to the realization that school doesn't work out for him.

  19. When we started reading "Our America" by LeAlan Jones and Llyod Newman, the question that came to my mind is, "How do you "escape" the ghetto?" What's interesting about this question to me is that it can be answered in so many ways. For example, it can be answered metophorically or literally. I am curious to know about what ways people who live in the ghetto can escape life in the ghetto. If it's metophorical, what do they do to block out the ghetto and if it's literal, how did they manage to get out?

I find your question very intriguing because i havent really thought of how one would "escape" the ghetto, because i believe that sometimes things seem more like a cycle. People tend to fall into the the same patterns, and when they're barely any opportunities(good ones) that are presented to you, its like they don't have a choice. :(

Its a good question but the reasoning isnt there in saying LeAlan and Lloyd have given up as well. You said you want to know why and how they gave up thats something you should be able to recognize if you already made that statement. If anything we wouldnt have this book and all the interviews in it. They have hope for themselves and your question is very similar to what they are documenting with their accounts and interviews. The question is strong and the evidence is thier not just in the book but in our communities.

You have a good question but you are not saying how Lloyd and LeAlan have given up your just saying they have gave up but not explaining how. You said you want to know how and why they gave up but your answer to that question is right there, you have good evidence just need to support it more with more reasoning to make your statement stronger.

    1. Griselle, your question is very good. This question is a bit similar to my question, how do people from the ghetto change for the worse. In a way they both link to how people do wrong or are influenced to do wrong, or just what changes someone in the ghetto to do wrong. For me I feel aside the fact that people can be influenced, its also that perhaps they change for the worst because they give up on life on their own.

      Delete
    2. Hey Gigi
While reading your question, "can someone influence you to do wrong"
its takes me back to the idea expressed by Le Alan where he talks about his sister going bad, he explained that she was influenced by the bad friends she moved around with... which makes me think that in reply to your question, You can be influenced to do wrong especially where being wrong is a moderate way of life.

      Delete
  23. My question is " why give up and not have faith in a change? ". I choose this question because I'm curious as to where they stand in their faith in a change. Also why has their faith in a change weakened after years. I think that they should not be so quick to let that burning desire in they heart for a change to die out because if they do what example would they be setting for the younger generations. They should be more influencing to the youth to give them the message to keep on pushing don't be so quick to give in and cell drugs and be gangsta to survive. Also if the community desperately wants to see a change they should start with their self instead of being the problem they could be the solution and try an fix the ghetto their self to make it a better community where its safe and comfortable for families and friends. All it takes is a small mustard seed.

  24. The question I choose is Why kids in the ghetto don't get involved in anything? I choice this question because some kids in the ghetto decide either they don't sell drugs or they don't go to school. A boy name George decided to quit school and start selling drugs. In the book he believes that going to school isn't going to change anything, since one of these days he is going to die, like everyone else. Other believe to do the opposite and try to make something with their life so they go to school to make a change with themselves.

i agree with your question, but i would also like to add that because kids live in ghetto other people expect them to fail.and when they fail they belive because they are from the gheeto that they have nothing to live for.and when kids are little they see things that make to belive that if that person goes to school that that person is only going to live in the street.but by selling drugs they would have money to get up out of the ghetto and the kids dont think theirs any concequences to what that person is doing.

Your question is really inteeresting to me. I do think that a person could be whatever they want to be regardless of their situation. Life is what you make it so no matter what struggles you are faced with you just have to be determined to make the your life better. For example in the book 'Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian' jr was determined to make himself better and not end up like his other family members so him made the very important decision to leave the rez so he could get a better education.

    2. I believe u came be what ever u want depending on how well and how bad u want it, it has nothing to do from where u came from, for example, jr from part time indian was able to go to a better school even tho he came from a reservation. even the boys from our america were able to make something in the end.

  26. The question I picked was "Does the neighborhood make the people or does the "hood" make the people ?" , I chose this question because in a lot of cities there is a lot of violence where the place is dirty or not up to the higher class. A nice neighborhood would have trees, wild life moving freely among people, and no trash on the floor would have a whole bunch of mature up coming people where the shootings or at a minimum. Well in a "hood" with graffiti and vandalism everywhere, the people tend to be a little on the poverty side mostly because of the drugs being sold near by or the gangs that post on corner to serve to the junkies. personally this question also applies to me because i am a eye witness, i seen a nice bad hood where gunshots you to go off right after school or you see people getting jumped on the basketball court too a couple of trees going up & painted over walls ? the people have calmed down now, now this is a neighborhood not a "hood" most people think

  27. My question is why do people give up on there future and can you tell when people are going to give up. This question is so interesting to me because on the book a straight A student like LeAlan's sister and the next day she was a drop out with a kid. Something like this can happen in everyday life so the question is so important because there has to be signals to know when someone is going to give up. In the book the sister dropped out of school the drug dealer Gerald that said he would be selling drugs and he would be dead within twenty years and that so will LeAlan will be dead soon to. I chose this question because it is so important to know and in order to fix the problems. The problems of people giving up on there future because if everyone gives up then there is no future

I find your question very relevant when speaking about the book "Our America." Both the narrators seem to hold on tight to hope while the rest of the world around them crashes and burns. I would of most likely picked your question if I did not pick mine. Your question pretty much has a lot to do with the whole entire book and each and every character in the book as well. 29. My question was how can people change the ghetto overtime? i belive that the ghetto can be changed if the community changes. For example in the book our america the people that live in the ida bwells are in a ghetto area because of the circumstances. citizens in that area are affected by shootings and all types of crimes. The ghetto can change in the ida bwells if everyone were to get together and support each other. this question is interesting to me because i believe it is possible for a ghetto area to become a better community.

For the first time since middle school i made the honor roll and what made me stride to do better and earn that was making my grandmother proud and stop dissapointing my mom. Your question was right because everyone has to find or has that person or thing that makes them better.

  32. While reading the amazing novel of "Our America" by LeAlan Jones AND Lyod Newman i created some interesting questions, but one of them i was really interested in. The question is, what is the definition of a good father? I am interested in this this question becuase in Loyd's and LeAlan's "ghetto" the males are selling or doing drugs, drinking alcohol and/or gangbanging. So what is the definition of a good father in that neighborhood. I specifically chose this question because when Loyd ask his father if he was a good father, he said yes. His answer towards that question was very interesting.

    1. Dear John

I find your question intresting. Usually people have a good interpretation of what a good father is, but once you are in "the hood" it's different. A good father could be anything. But when you mention Lloyd's father and his response, it may change peoples perspective. There might be many ways to answer this question. Overall your question is intresting

    2. Dear John L. Rodriguez,
I like the question you chose because I can relate to it so well. I know what it's like to have a father figure from that kind of life. It's a difficult question to answer because in the father's mind, he might feel like he's the best father in the world, but that doesn't mean that he really is. It depends on how the child feels about their father and how other people see their father too. My step-father swears he's the best father, but he never looks for my little brother. See what I'm saying? It's a really good question.

  34. While reading the book "Our America" the question i came up with is, "how are individuals impacted by there environment." In the book "Our America" two boys share the everyday life of how it is growing up in the Ida B.Wells projects, which is described to be dangerous. Why i find my question to be interesting is because it is build off of situations such as LeAlan's sister, who went from being a straight A student one day to becoming a drop out with a child. Children in the ghetto are being influenced by their friends who are being influenced by adults with no future. This is impacting the lives of the children growing up in the ghetto and the person they will become in the future, Another example is the two boys throwing a younger boy out the window because he wouldn't steal candy for them. Situations like these are not acceptable, but in reality these children do not know right from wrong, because they witness situations like these everyday and do not take responsibility for their actions.

  35. The question i chose for OUR AMERICA was [ How can you change your future?] what mainly intrest me the most about this question is the thaught and reality of how you can actually change your future and what may you be able to do to effect it.Theres alot of things that one can do such as either achieveing goals, setting goals, or maybe even changing the way the have views or thaughts of something . which can make both of the things they are trying to achieve better.Your future mainly depends on what gives you a benenift to society, aswell as your being. My mother always said to me just because you live in the ghetto doesnt mean you have to make the ghetto. That meant alot to me because it told me that just because i live in the ghetto it doesnt nescassarily mean it has to be apart of me i dont know i geuss its what ever a persons view on reality and what there perspective is.
