  3. Scott FItzgerald uses setting in "the great Gatsby" to show how at some point every good thing comes to an end.One of the main characters known as Gatsby, who's very rich and holds parties every so often held this one party where he invited Nick over. Nick is his neighbor, also a main character in the book. At the party everybody was having a good time, dancing, eating, singing and enjoying when the whole mood and setting/ atmosphere changed to a more solemn, sad and confusing atmosphere.
First the lady at the piano started crying and waling because of her husband, then every couple at the party started fighting because they were always the ones leaving the party first. After that everyone started leaving and a car got stuck in a ditch which contained a mysterious passenger.

  4. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses a book shelf as a symbol to show that when someone see through Gatsby`s illusion of fancy, his world would crumble. One piece of evidence that shows this is “He snatched the book from me and replaced it hastily on its shelf, muttering that if one brick was removed the whole library was liable to collapse.” The example describes Gatsby`s attempt of showing his Fanciness. Yet, if people see through his illusion of fanciness, Gatsby`s world may crumble itself. Everything must be perfect in Gatsby`s eyes, or it may all crumble.

  5. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the library as a symbol. He uses it to show that things are not really what they seem. Once going into the library, Nick and Jordan see a drunk man who's going wild over the library books, babbling about how they're real and whatnot. And he continues to repeat that they are real, over and over. One thing he says in particular, is, "He snatched the book from me and replaced it hastily on its shelf, muttering that if one brick was removed the whole library was liable to collapse." Its almost like saying, that if someone comes out of who Gatsby's personality, his whole self could collapse. If he reveals his true self, all of his fanciness and his illusion would turn to pieces.

  6. In the book The Great Gatsby the author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses characterization to show how even though everyone is having a swell time, at any point everything can go wrong and disastrous. In the book, a woman was playing the piano while singing in a party hosted by Gatsby. She soon starts crying, which grabs everyone's attention and soon the couples also start crying and complaining. Now that the atmosphere is a very sad one, out of no where a crowd appears to circle around a car missing a tire. A coupe has been crashed and was missing a tire. The man in the vehicle was explaining that he dint know what happened and that there was apparently another man with him that left. From everyone having a good time, the people in the party are now sad, confused, and frustrated.

  7. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses setting in The Great Gatsby to show how people interact with each other and the effect their environment has on them. Due to the fact that Gatsby lives in West Egg and throws lavish parties quite often, Nick was under the impression that he was chubby somewhat; not as handsome as he appeared to be. And as Nick talks to Gatsby, realizing who he is, he states that “ He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles, that you may come across four or five times in your life.” This shows how people may perceive depending on the people you know, or the status you uphold. Tom Buchanan however, lets the idea of luxury and power get to his head. He lives a double-life, where he has his wife Daisy who lives with in East Egg and Myrtle who is girlfriend, that he sees sometimes. When Nick arrives at Myrtle’s apartment with Tom he states that, “The living room was crowded to the doors with tapestry furniture entirely too large..” This shows how Tom and Myrtle try to incorporate his luxurious life in with her small life, but it ends up being chaotic.

  8. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses "Symbolism" in his book The Great Gastby to create atmosphere as well as add on to the setting. For example, in the second chapter of the book, Tom Buchanan takes his wife Daisy's cousin; Nick, to meet his mistress Myrtle. After they meet, they go up to Myrtle and Tom's apartment that's described as "White cake". Inside the apartment, there is a painting that looks like a hen sitting on a rock at first glance, but is actually a painting of an old lady with a bonet. This shows the symbolism of illusion, that everything isn't always what it seems.
The same applies to chapter one, in Tom's living room, the two women in all white floating from the wind symbolizing the pureness inside the room, but as soon as Tom walks in, everything re-gains gravity, as if his presence disturbed the peace.

  9. In the novel "The Great Gatsby" the author F.Scott Fitzgerald uses the shelves in the library as a symbol. The shelves in Gatsby's mansion resembles how the owner is the author says “He snatched the book from me and replaced it hastily on its shelf, muttering that if one brick was removed the whole library was liable to collapse.” This shows that Gatsby seems to represent himself as a different person in the eyes of others no one knows what each shelve consumes within itself.Just like Gatsby he will put up an impression to his guests just so he can get information from them but no one knows what he is thinking let alone who he is as a person. If anyone sees past his fake facade his whole act will collapse just like the bookshelves if one book is taken out everything will fall down.Nothing is the way it seems everything is held in a certain structure or wall if that wall is broken down everything shatters.

  10. In the novel "The Great Gatsby" the author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to show how Gatsby` Is perceived by his guest. In the book a man with owl eyes checks if the books at Gatsby library are real or fake, "about that. As a matter of fact you needn't bother to ascertain. I ascertained.they're real." The description of the books are to symbolize the misunderstanding that Gatsby's guest have of him and how he really is. The guest don't know what is real or fake about Gatsby, because of all the rumors that are fabricated about him. The library is a symbol of all the rumors that have been made up of Gatsby and the actual reality.

  11. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the books in the library as a symbol to show that a person’s first thought about Gatsby would be that he is not very intelligent. When Nick and Jordan enter the library there is a man in there. When this man begins to speak with Nick and Jordan he focuses on the books that are on the shelves. The man says “Absolutely real — have pages and everything. I thought they’d be a nice durable cardboard. Matter of fact, they’re absolutely real” when he is referring to the books. When he says that he thought they would be “a nice durable cardboard” he vaguely implies that he thought Gatsby was, in simple terms, an idiot. You do not assume that a person has a library full of fake books unless you have a preconceived idea that they are not very intelligent. The books being real in this case represent Gatsby’s true personality contradicting this man’s idea of him.

  12. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the library to symbolize how people aren't who they always seem to be. Jordan and Nick entered Gatsby's library not knowing who Gatsby really was. Nick and Jordan were surprised that the man they were talking to was Gatsby. Gatsby started to talk about his library saying that if anything was to be moved that the whole thing would come crashing down. Gatsby starts talking about the books and says " Absolutely real- have pages and everything. I thought they’d be a nice durable cardboard. Matter of fact, they’re absolutely real”, Gatsby was talking about the books and basically showing that he isn't as dumb as people make him seem. Nick and Jordan were surprised that the books were actually real, they thought of Gatsby as unintelligent man, but in all reality his library shows how intelligent his is. Nick and Jordan start to second guess on how they view Gatsby as a person and notice that Gatsby has different personalities with different types of people.

  13. F. Scott Fitzgerald the author of the novel "The Great Gatsby" used characterization to describe Gatsby by his appearance. " A stout, middle-aged man, with enormous owl-eyed spectacles, was sitting somewhat drunk on the edge of a great table, staring with unsteady concentration at the shelves of book". By the way Gatsby is characterized in this scene of the novel it shows that he can be described as a mysterious and secretive person and can also be refer as an alcoholic.

  14. In the book The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the literary element of setting to show how a situation can go from being good to bad at any moment. In the book, when everyone is leaving Gatsby’s party early in the morning, everyone is drunk and not worrying about anything, but as soon as people began gathering outside of the house everyone saw the scene of a car accident. When Nick says,” But I walked down the steps I saw that the evening was not quite over. Fifty feet from the door a dozen headlights illuminated a bizarre and tumultuous scene” (pg 53), this shows that Nick was not expecting to see a car accident, he was just expecting to go home from the party that had already ended. When Nick goes outside he also sees a crowd of people from the party starring at the driver’s side of the car which was now opening and a man was coming out. When the quote, “Then, gradually, part by part, a pale, dangling individual stepped out of the wreck, pawing tentatively at the ground with a large uncertain dancing shoe” (pg 54) , it shows how the man was probably happy, but then became confused as to what had happened the moments before causing the car accident. In the book, setting is used to show how people were happy, and entertained in Gatsby’s party, but as soon as it was time to leave the people started acting differently.

  16. In the book "The Great Gatsby" the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, uses the Literary technique symbolism to develop the passage. "See!" he cried triumphantly. "It's a bona-fide piece of printed matter. It fooled me. This fella's a regular Belasco. It's a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop, too - didn't cut the pages. But what do you want? What do you expect?". Gatsby wants people to believe that he's a well-educated man but he hasn't even cracked open the books. So, the simple answer is that the books represent the fact that Gatsby is a fraud. This quote shows how the symbol of the books in Gatsby's library help develop the passage.

  17. Author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to come across a point without directly adressing it in the book leaving a trail of opinion, a way for you to interpret what it is he meant. Throughout the book the protagonist Nick usually hears about his neighbor Gatsby and there opinions on his shady out look considering that he is not known to many people. Nick gets invited personally to one of Gatsby's parties in which not many people are since they show up to the one's he usually always had, and through that he personally gets to meet Gatsby's first hand. In which Nick describes the smile that Gatsby gives him when he is in the room, in that smile Nick takes a moment to take in the greatness of the smile and how deep it leaks into. Fitzgerald uses Nick's moment of silence where he describes the smile to really describe the deeper meaning of the smile, in which it really describes the view of the man Gatsby is to the naked eye, a humble, mysterious yet smart cunning man. The author uses symbolism here to more than enough describe Gatsby's first impression to Nick and you with out jumping straight into what he really is trying to say.

  18. In THE GREAT GATSBY the author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses setting to develop the story by building a clear and detailed vision of where events takes place in the reader's mind. According to the book after the party was at the edge of being over Nick the narrator describes an accident that occurred with specific details of the environment. He said; in the ditch beside the road, right side up, but violently shorn of one wheel rested a new coupe, which had left Gatsby's drive not two minutes before. The sharp jut of a wall accounted for the detachment of a wheel, which was now getting considerable attention from half a dozen curious chauffeurs. However as they had left their cars blocking the road, a harsh discordant din from those in the rear had been audible for sometime, and added to the already violent confusion of the scene. This is interesting because such detailed description will the reader create a chaotic and violent setting, a place filled with cars in terrible arrangement, their positions and gathering and this will help develop a better understanding of the story.

  19. In the book the great gatsby F Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to show how people can try to act a different way from how they actually are. In the book myrtle has an house with small rooms and big furniture this shows that she might want to be with tom but she is really with her husband. The rooms and the huge furniture show that how she wants to be with tom the rich upperclass man but she is really with her husband mr Wilson the lifeless exhausted owner of a run down auto shop at the edge of the valley of ashes. The small rooms can represent him and the big furniture can represent tom. Another example in the book could be of the photo in the of the over enlarged photograph that looked like a hen sitting on a blurred rock from a distance but it was actually a bonnet and an old lady this shows that everything is not actually what it may seem to be.

  20. In the Novel "The Great Gaysby", the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to show how people regard Gatsby. When Owl Eyes questions the real ness of Gatsby's books, Gatsby says: "Absolutely real---have pages and everything. I thought they'd be a nice durable cardboard. Matter of fact they're absolutely real." When Gatsby says this, it symbolizes how hard he tries in order to make people perceive him as real. When he sees that people doubt him, it's as if he begins to stutter and rambles. Gatsby cares a lot about his image and his reputation.

  22. the author F. Scott Fitzgerald, uses setting to show how the party went good to very bad. people look up to gaspy like he is some all mighty popular person when in reality he just a regular person. the men who showed to the party wanted to look at other girls showing their own wives that they must not care. wives think this the perfect opportunity to show them that they don't need their husband. when the party was finishing the husbands would try to ask their two wives "ok lets go home" the wives answered "No, we are sick and tired of us not getting attention" then they water to stay with gaspy after the party. This just made the whole party into some weird and envy type of setting showing people true colors.. After a while they notice gaspy wasn't really different from their own husband and decided to go back to their husband, gaspy setting is to show he is smart by having all types of cool smart books to show how smart he is .. when none of the book were ever opened showing the setting of gaspy is fake/bad

  25. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that uses many literary techniques. A great literary technique he uses in this novel is symbolism. In chapter 3 Nick is in a party where he was invited by Gatsby. Since no one has seen Gatsby in his party Jordan and Nick go looking for him. They walk into this elegant library and a drunken guy is telling them how they thought that the books were fake but they're real. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the books in the library as a symbol of brightness. so if the books were real it means Gatsby is smart and if they weren't he was smart.

In the novel the main characters Nick and Jordan were at a party given at Gatsby's house. As they explored Gatsby's home they came across a library where they were greeted by a man. Nick the narrator then goes on to explain how the man was intoxicated for over a week. The narrator also explains how every book in the library had been real and how each book were pieces to a bigger picture which raises the question "Who is Gatsby"? In chapter 3 of the book The Great Gatsby symbolism is shown when the intoxicated man refers to the books in the library as puzzle pieces to a larger picture. style . with gatsby he is rich and wealthy and with nick he is niot wealthy he lives a decent life.

  32. In the novel The Great Gatsby F.Scott Fitzgerald uses setting to show how people are not what they usually seem to be. For example Mertyl it a fairly poor lady who portrayed a rich look as she as a little apartment but it is really packed with expensive vintage furniture.Even thou she was married that didnot stop her from getting involved with Tom as she saw him as her prince charming who would make all her dreams come through

  34. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses point of view to show how conflicting human nature can be. He writes using the perspective of Nick in a first person limited view. This effectively limits how much we know forcing us to only be able to assume from what Nick sees. While certain characters don't know of anthers action as Nick learns we do as well. We see a mysterious man such as Gatsby at his weakest which few have seen and we see Daisy in a state of pure joy which we did not see with her when she was with tom.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In Gatsby the author uses New York to symbolize as like an escape for both Daisy and Tom. Cause Mertyl runs away from her poor life too go to Tom where he buys her gifts and a puppy. Also Daisy gets away for moments with Gatsby too be happy with the first man that she ever loved.
