Quote #1
Due on Monday, October 13, 2014

"If you stay on this rez," Mr. P said, "they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever."

"I don't want to fight anybody," I said.

"You've been fighting since you were born," he said. "You fought off that brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope."

I was starting to understand. He was a math teacher. I had to add my hope to somebody else's hope. I had to multiply my hope.

"Where is hope?" I asked. "Who has hope?"

"Son," Mr. P said. "You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation." (p. 43)

  2. This excerpt means that if the main character wants to keep the little hope he has and find more, he must leave the reservation for the indians and go somewhere where there is more hope for him. In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part - Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Mr.P tells the main character "if you stay on this rez," Mr.P said, "they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever." This quote means that if the main character stays on the reservation they going to bring the hope that he has down. Also In this quote "You fought off the brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope." Mr.P is telling the main character that after everything he's been through he's been fighting for the little hope he has and in order to keep that hope he must go somewhere where other people have hope just like him. And then the main character ask Mr.P where is this hope he's talking about and Mr.P tells the main character that he is going to find hope the farther he walks away from the reservation.

  4. This quote from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie in other words, means that people need to sometimes escape their current environment in order to achieve something greater in life. The protagonist of the story, Junior lives on the Indian reservation which is filled with nothing but hopeless people and poverty. He wants to be able to achieve his dream of becoming a famous cartoon artist but his chances are slim due to the fact that there is no opportunity where he lives. His math teacher ends up giving him advice and telling him that he is “going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation" (p. 43). He also states the fact Junior has been fighting ever since he was born and can continue to fight to obtain a bright future for not only himself, but his people as well. He has to make a big decision and turn his back on his community and head over to the racist white school because the children there have a bright future. This is also true for the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The two characters George and Lenny were living in the time of the Great Depression and decided to go and find jobs working for someone else so that they themselves might one day earn enough to have their own farm and “live off the fatta the lan’” (p. 56). Their previous situation was not ideal for them so they had to travel around until they found sustainability and achieve something greater.

  5. This excerpt from the book, "The Absolutely True Diary of A Part Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie means that in order to find hope, you must leave the reservation and actually find it. In this quote by Mr.P, "Son," Mr. P said. "You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation." (p. 43), he clearly states that. The red doesn't have much opportunity for anybody, therefore, the longer he stays, the more hopeless he will feel.

  6. This excerpt means that if Junior does not leave the reservation, his hope will slowly fade away. In the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Mr.P says, "If you stay on the Rez, they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever." This quote means that if he wants to keep the little hope he has, he needs to leave the reservation and go to a place where other people have hope as well. Everyone in the Rez that he knows have already lost all their hope, if he stays he will lose hope just like them and won't go after his dreams.

  7. The excerpt is basically showing or saying the motivation Mr. P is trying to give Junior. Mr. P is telling Junior that if he stays on the rez he won't get where he wants to be and it'll kill him. It may not kill him literally but mentally and emotionally it will definitely crush his hopes and dreams. So in order for Junior to get where he wants to be, Mr. P is saying that it won't happen on the rez and Junior has to make his dreams happen on his own with all the hope he has. Just like in "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie, in the book "Divergent" by Veronica Roth, the main character is in a position where if she wants to survive she needs to either keep quiet or run away and just like Mr. P suggests that Junior leaves to fulfill his dreams, the main character in "Divergent" ends up leaving where she's from because of what will happen to her if she stays.

  8. This excerpt in " The absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian" by Sherman Alexie means that sometime people will have to escape their environment to succeed in life because their current environment would probably just do them harm. For Example, Mr.P said "If you stay on this rez," Mr. P said, "they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you." this quote would suggest that the main character's environment, "The Rez" will only cause him harm if he stays. In addition, in the article "The Absence of Native American Power" Sherman Alexie says in an interview that she feels "lost and insignificant inside the larger culture". In this case she is talking about an Indian reservation which also ties in with a quote from the excerpt. Mr.P says "You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation." this quote is an example of how people feel "lost and insignificant" inside the main character's environment which is also an Indian reservation. In the end Mr.P is encouraging the main character to maintain hope and leave his sad environment to go and live among those who have hope as well to achieve his goals and succeed in life, as oppose to everyone in the reservation.

  9. This excerpt is very important because it influences Juniors decisions.I think Mr.Ps advice ties into the discussion we had in class about turning your back on your family in order to find success. If Junior decides to stay at the rez, there's really no chance of a better future for him so his only option is to leave like Mr.P says. He needs to find the strength to take a move towards hope even if it will end up with him getting hated by the people. Sometimes you need to understand the difference between your goals and ambitions and the goals and ambitions of your loved ones, you can't always do things to please others, you have to think about yourself and your life and how the decisions you make affect you, then you can think about how the decision affects your family and community. For Junior to succeed, he has to leave the rez.

  11. This Excerpt from " The true diary of a part- time Indian" by Sherman Alexie portrays the motivation that Mr P gives to junior to convince him to leave his environment in order for him to succeed the hope that he has been clinging to. In the quote "If you stay on this rez," Mr.

And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope." the danger becomes clear, life on the rez is going to kill junior mentally but not physically. mr. P is trying to say that people on the rez is going to kill Junior's hope and also his spirit to strive for it. life currently on the rez is hard and difficult for anyone. But for junior it's even more difficult because of his current circumstances. Mr. P is telling junior that hope is far far away from the rez because of the fact that people on the rez have no hope themselves and staying there is only going to deter junior from his " american dream". In the book " Of Beetles and Angels" by Mawi selgdom the family of mawi flee from the war in sudan to live in america to achieve their " American Dream". Staying near the war will only make them lose their hope and willigness to survive in society but they left to america where they had to adjust to a new culture and eventually Mawi had a scholarship to Havard which was his version of the " American Dream".

  12. The excerpt above shows that Mr.P believes in Junior even if Junior doesn't believe it himself. Mr.P is taking the time to warn Junior that everyone around him is poisonous to him. They all hold junior back in someway and Mr.P doesn't want Junior to end up like the rest of the people in the reservation. Mr.P saw this hope when Junior threw his book at Mr.P. Mr.P knew that Junior was fed up and that he wanted change. Like we discussed in class, sometimes you have to turn your back on your community to achieve something greater.

  13. This excerpt shows that you need to let go of what's holding you back no matter how much hurt you may cause because if you don't let go, you will only be hurting yourself. You have to do what is best for yourself to make yourself happy. In the book, The True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Mr.P is trying to convince Junior to leave his home (the reservation) because staying there wouldn't help accomplish his dream of becoming a cartoon artist. There is no hope. Mr. P tells Junior, "Son, you're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation." (p. 43) Staying, would only make Junior to most likely give up like everyone else. This is also true in, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green but vice versa. Grace knows her time will soon come but she doesn't give up in life. She continues to fight for her parents who still has hope that she will survive and live longer.

  14. The Excerpt from The absolutely true diary of a part- time Indian by Sherman Alexie Mr. P is talking to Junior about dreams and the reservation. “If you stay on this rez,” Mr. P said, “they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever.” You can’t stay in a place where people don’t have dreams. These people stop searching for their dreams. Junior is fighting them by having a dream. Being around them can turn you into them, a person with a dream that was lost. Mr. P is saying if you want to accomplish your dreams, you need to surround yourself with others who have dreams. It’s hard to find happiness in a place where there’s no happiness.

  15. The excerpt from The Absolutely True Diary Of a Part-Time Indian is demonstrating how the white people on the rez will eventually overpower Junior and the rest of the Indians. Junior is one of the only people on the reservation that still has hope and potential. Mr. P is telling junior that his best bet is to get away from the negativity and become a positive individual who is successful in the future. If Junior doesn't leave the reservation he will lose hope just like everyone else on the reservation and eventually get over powered by white people. The further away junior goes the more enlightening he will feel. Mr. P has a lot of hope. He hopes for nothing but the best for Junior In fact he believes that its his best bet to go away, far away, and never look back.

  16. This quote is very important for the plot moving forward. First of all is show's Mr.P basically admitting that him and many other people goal with settling in the rez is to complete get rid of the remaining amount of Indian culture inside of the rez. The quote also show's how guilty Mr.P feels about it and that he doesn't want Jr to fall victim to this. Lastly the quote leaves Jr in a very interesting position where he has to decide weather to either stay at the rez now knowing the true goal of a lot of the people of power at the rez or to leave the rez completely and move on to a new life. The rest of Jr life will drastically change because of this quote.

  19. Mr. P is telling junior that if he wants to find hope, he has to get as far away from the reservation as he possibly can. Junior has a chance because from the moment he was born, he was fighting. Fighting to be stay alive and to have a better life. Junior is different from the others in the way that he hasn't given up. He wants to do better and his hope can help him do so. In order to do so, Junior has to go "multiply" his hope. He can't stay on the Rez or else he'll end up like everyone else. Hopeless and dead inside.

  21. i believe that Mr.P is basically trying to tell him to not lose hope and to go far far away as he can. And he shouldn't stay and have a lot of hope .if he doesn't stay he would end up like everyone else which he is not like everyone else he has the opportunity to change this by leaving rez Mr.P wants him to because he doesn't want him to end up like everyone else hopeless and dead. He is telling him also that he has had this opportunity since he was born so he can live a better life .Mr.P is giving junior a good advice that he should follow and because he wants the best for him in life.

  23. Mr.P is telling Junior that if he stays at he rez for the rest of his life, he wont get far in his hopes and dreams. He feels that Junior should leave the rez to explore and expand in his hopes to get far in life. That Junior should not worry about his friends and family would say or think about his decisions. Mr.P explains to him that if he doesnt leave, he will end up probably dying for fighting for his hopes and dreams.

  24. This Excerpt from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, shows how Junior's life can crumble into pieces if he doesn't leave the rez, for good. It's hard for Junior to process the words that were just sad to him. Mr. P explained how his sister, once a very bright and shining star is now so dull, due to their poorly developed environment."Mary was a bright and shining star, and then she faded year by year until you could barely see her anymore." This quotes shows Mr.P's sympathy. He doesn't want Junior to end up like that, which is why he's not asking Junior to leave the rez, but he's telling him. This situation also relates to "On The Reservation and Off, Schools See a Changing Tide." by Kirk Johnson. Johnson interviewed a mother of whom's child attends to a school on the reservation. "Jasmine was falling through the cracks. I asked them to help her at Lodge Grass, and she didn't improve." Although it's not quite the same situation, what both Junior and Jasmine have in common is the struggle of pursuing further in life. They both want to better themselves but in their situation it is very hard for them. Their hope and dreams could be destroyed if they don't get off the reservation.

  25. In the excerpt Mr. P is explaining to junior that he needs to move away from the reservation because there’s no hope there. Junior is different from the rest of them in the reservation, he needs to get away for his own good. All Mr. P wants is to see Junior succeed and he’s helping him do that by telling him that he needs to get as far away as possible so the negativity from the indians in the reservation won’t get to him and that he won’t be able to put up with it for ever, it will eventually take over him or kill him. Like in the quote "If you stay on this rez," Mr. P said, "they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever.”

  27. n the excerpt from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Mr. P tells Junior he has to get off the rez in order to have a better life. He tells him he is different from everyone else on the rez, he has something they don't have; hope and he is a fighter, even though Junior doesn't know it. He is a huge fighter he's fought off brain surgery, seizures and all those hopeless drunks and drug addicts that make an attempt to break him down, he still remains strong. Mr. P doesn't want Junior to end up like everyone else on the rez hopeless, drug addict or a alcoholic. He tells him that the further he goes from the rez the more hope he will have; the better he could make his life, the more chance he'll have of achieving his dreams instead of giving up his dream like his sister did and live in a life or sadness and depression. All Mr. P sees in Junior is hope and success.

  30. In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie you see a lot of talk about hope. In the excerpt you see Mr. P telling Junior that he must leave the reservation if he is ever going to have any hope in his future. In page 43 Mr. P says "You've been fighting since you were born," he said. "You fought off that brain surgery. You fought off those seizures. You fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.". This quote shows that Mr. P wanted Junior to have a chance in a good future and have hope. He also is telling Junior that the only way he will be able to have hope is by leaving the reservation. Hope is also present in the book Hate List by Jennifer Brown. The main character Valarie has gone through something that has affected her whole life but through out the book you can see that their is hope for her to have a future. In both books you can see that hope is what keeps the main characters going.

He also proclaims that everyone is going to kill him but what this really means is that the society is already ahead of him and they're never going to let him be smarter and more advanced than them. Ultimately, he wants junior to have a better life and that's not on the rez.
