Due Monday, December 21

The following passage takes place on page 110 of The Great Gatsby:

Nick:  "I wouldn't ask too much of her," I ventured.  "You can't repeat the past."

Gatsby: "Can't repeat the past?"  he cried incredulously.  "Why of course you can!"

He looked around wildly, as if the past were lurking here in the shadow of his house, just out of reach of his hand.

Based on your understanding of Chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby which point of view do you find to be most accurate and why.  Explain in a well-developed paragraph.

  1. Nicks point of view is most accurate because you can't repeat the past no one can you can only move forward not back eventually time passes. In the book The great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick says "you can't repeat the past" but Gatsby counteracts that by saying "why of course you can" Gatsby is obviously delusional when saying this. He thinks he can relive his past romance with Daisy, but Gatsby doesn't realize that what he and daisy had is old and he need to move forward, but he doesn't and he find himself in a big situation because of this. When Gatsby and Daisy leave after the altercation between Tom and Gatsby, Daisy hits and instantly kills Myrtle with Gatsby cars and this causes problems for Gatsby.

  2. Nick's perspective is more accurate. When Nick said you can't repeat the past Gatsby's response was " why of course you can". Gatsby wanted to race the five years from his life and also Daisy. Gatsby couldnt accept daisy until she erased those years from her life by telling Tom that she never loved him to his face. This shows thats to repeat the past you have to put pressure on things or people in the present to erase out competely. repeating the past is to reoccur every single event and thing that happened. It is hard to repeat the past but it is also possible to bring back fragments of the past. Repeating the past occurs sporadically in our lives

  3. Nick's point of view is more accurate. In the book "The Great Gatsby" by Fetzgerald, Nick stated, "you cant repeat the pass", but Gatsby disagreed with him stating "why of course you can". A person cant repeat the past but the past can repeat itself. Gatsby thinks he can win Daisy back from Tom and make her love him like she used too, but the fact is that Gatsby cant do that because Daisy loves her husband, but if fates decides, Daisy can love Gatsby and then the past will repeats itself on what they had. Gatsby cant repeat the past because he cant force Diasy to love him like she used too.

  4. Gatsby's perspective is more accurate. Gatsby dreams of the girl he met before going to the war and hopes to regain her back. This girl is Daisy and his determination to grasp Daisy's love while being married to Tom is an illusion. The past Gatsby wants to gain back is hard to retrieve Daisy. She is not only older but is married and has a child. You cant exactly repeat the past but you can attempt to do so. Gatsby tries and it worked. But he didn't realize that the past he was trying to gain was the past in which Daisy left him while he was away at war. You can repeat the past but may achieve a different outcome. Lastly you can't repeat the past because sometimes its not possible and sometimes it is not good to repeat it.

  5. Gatsby's point of view is more accurate than Nick's point of view. The past can surely be repeated, but only if the individual never learns from the past in chapter seven of The Great Gatsby we see in the beginning that Gatsby and Daisy are falling for each other and showing that they love each other again. However, after a turn of events and a confrontation between Tom and Gatsby, Daisy starts to see and change, making her love Tom and not repeat the past with Gatsby. Even though in this situation the past was not repeated, it was still a very possible chance of Daisy and Gatsby reconciling. Daisy learned and experienced many new which changed her way of thinking and led to not repeating the past. On the other hand, if Tom were to never make Daisy realize the good times they've had together, the past would have been repeated. It is always possible to have past outcomes repeated.

  6. Nick's point of view is more accurate. In the book, The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, Nick says, "You can't repeat the past", Gatsby replied, "Why of-course you can." Is not possible to repeat the past. Gatsby now is very wealthy something he wasn't very long ago so he does a lot to impress Daisy, he came back Into her life with a dream to regain her love. Gatsby is delusional thinking he can just make Daisy his love again and move forward with their love even though she is now married and has a child. They reconnected and they did fall for each other again but that did not last. You can't recreate memories with something that is long gone because you will get a different outcome things will not be the same.

  7. I find that Nick's perspective is more accurate than Gatsby's. In reality, an individual cannot repeat the past but can merely recreate it; even then, it’s not entirely the same thing as it once was. People grow over time and change. Gatsby wanted to spark the flame that Daisy and he once shared, but unfortunately after he left to go to war, she found another man and loved him, even if it were just a short while, and married him. Gatsby and Daisy were teenagers when they first met, and now they're adults and have parted ways. He set his expectations too high and was inevitably disappointed with the results. Daisy says "Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby. "I love you now – isn't that enough? I can't help what's past” (pg. 132). Daisy realizes that she will never live up to the image that Gatsby has in his head but he is in denial of that fact and thus, never be able to relive the moments they once shared five years ago.

  8. Gatsby's point of view is more accurate than Nicks . Of course no one can really repeat he past . But people can make the same mistake over and over again . Like Gatsby going after daisy . This is what Gatsby probably meant . People usually fall into traps that make them make the same mistake over and over again.
