The Great Gatsby, Chapter 1 Response

DUE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26
In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to establish a greater meaning in the text.   Consider what you read in Chapter One of the book and write a two to three paragraph response in which you analyze how the author’s use of symbolism helps communicate a larger meaning.  Use strong and thorough evidence from the text to support your analysis. Do not simply summarize the text.
Guidelines:
Be sure to:
• Identify a central idea in the text
• Analyze how the author’s use of one writing strategy (literary element or literary technique or rhetorical device) develops this central idea. Examples include: characterization, conflict, denotation/connotation, metaphor, simile, irony, language use, point-of-view, setting, structure, symbolism, theme, tone, etc.
• Use strong and thorough evidence from the text to support your analysis
• Organize your ideas in a cohesive and coherent manner
• Maintain a formal style of writing

  1. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,he told me,just remember that all people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had. It means,in this world, some people are fortunate and others are less fortunate in life.Even our fingers tell a story about life. Not all fingers are the same, they all have different length are sizes yet they all have unity. We shouldn't look down on people for what they are going through now because time changes..

  2. The author of "The Great Gatsby" uses symbolism to repesent that sometimes in life not everyone is living at the same level as you or get to have the chances you do. Chapter 1 line 3 "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

This line shows that you can never judge someone because you dont know what they have been through. Or the things they have not gotten to exprience. People can be fast to judge but not know the entire story or struggle. In the Gatsby he is quick to judge because it is a habit. It's a habit because he is a rich kid with a good family. So he does not see other people struggles.

  3. In The Great Gatsby the author uses symbolism to show that sometimes in life not everyone is living at the same way you are in the book it says on line 3 chapter 1 "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

it say like some people may have took different step not everybody has the same you cant tell the next person about how they live if you really have not been in their life for a long time and when you got it like that and you never felt the way others feel and nobody never told you it a whole different story.

  4. The author of "The Great Gatsby" uses symbolism through color. He uses color to represent different characters in the book. In chapter 1 page 8 it says "They were both in white, and dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house."The author uses the color white to describe Daisy and Jordan when they enter the room. The color white is a representation of the innocence and purity of a person. The author is saying that Daisy and Jordan aren't corrupted people and that have innocence in them.

  5. In the book "The Great Gatsby" the author uses the metaphor "a beautiful fool" in line 5 page 17 to describe what she hopes for her daughter. In the book Daisy says "I hope she'll be a fool— that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.' " in this line when she says she hopes she's a fool it means she doesn't want her daughter to have as much knowledge as her because the things you go through in life can change your life drastically. She wants her to be beautiful and pure. Daisy doesn't want her daughter as damaged as her.

The author also uses colors to symbolize feelings and textures for different characters. In page 16, line 11-15 he says "Daisy took her face in her hands as if feelings it's lovely shape, and her eyes moved gradually out into the velvet dusk." He vividly described her actions using comparisons and symbolism.

In the very beginning of the book "The Great Gatsby" The author tells his son that "When ever you feel like criticizing any one he told me just remember that all people in the world haven't had the advantages that you have had". This quote basically says that not every one in life has had an easy life not everyone is born into wealth like he was his father was showing him the good ways and showing him not to be greedy or judge people just because of how they live or how they dress or how the speak or act you have to treat everyone with dignity and respect.

In that quote it basically shows that we all come in Different shapes and sizes and all have different features and we all go thru the struggles but just because you have money and live in a house doesn't mean that the people who live in a apartment are any different because you don't know what they going thru or what are their everyday struggles not everyone has a perfect life so never for get that "When ever you feel like criticizing someone he told me just remember that all people in the world haven't had the advantages that you have had in life!

  7. In the book "The Great Gatsby", we see how the author uses symbolism to communicate a large meaning to show us how the characters feel and how they are. Color are one example, We have white that means innocence and purity. In the first chapter we see when Gatsby points to a green light across the bay to Daisy's East Egg dock. In this case, green doesn't necessarily mean money. Gatsby signals Nick that is where his goal is. The green light represents Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. The green could probably symbolize the money in which shes after. It could also mean that he is trying to display lavishly with his mansion and money so he can capture her attention.

  8. The author of "The Great Gatsby" uses symbolism to show the difference between the way of life of two wealthy communities.
The author uses Gatsby and the Buchanan as a symbol to represent the way of life between East egg and West egg. The West egg are characterized by the display of their wealth. In page 5,Nick described the mansion of Gatsby as a huge house beside his. He stated "it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy". He described how gigantic the house was and this shows how the West liked to display their wealth to the public. The East on the other hand are fashionable but do not usually display their wealth. They are normally characterized by how they behave or their manner. The East was more arrogant and looked down on people. In page 7,Nick described the manner of Tom Buchanan. He stated "he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a hard mouth and a supercilious manner". Tom was arrogant and thought he was superior to others which is a typical behavior of the East egg.
Also, the author uses the way or style of life as a symbol to represent the difference between West egg and East egg. In page 5, Nick described the way of life of the West. He stated "I lived at West egg, the-well, less fashionable of the two". The people in the West were people who were just acquiring wealth and had more morals and manners compared to the East. Nick described the East as more fashionable. He stated "Across the courtesy bay the white places of fashionable East egg glittered along the water". The East were people who inherited their wealth and usually had manners.

  9. The author of The Great Gatsby use characterization to show that people make wrong choices which they think is good
In life people think whatever they are doing is right. They ignore the advice of people because they think others are jealous of them or what they have. Regrets is what they feel when they find out they have messed up.
From the passage Daisy expresses how she feels after getting married to Tom."All right, I said, i'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she will be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world,a beautiful little fool". Due to the wrong choice Daisy made she now regrets for getting married to Tom because of money and not waiting for the love of her life.
Due to the bad treatment she goes through with Tom,she hopes a young daughter will grow to be a beautiful little fool.she would have hoped for a better future for her daughter if she waited for the lover of her life. She's not happy but she choose to marry him due to the wealth and benefits that came with him.

  10. The author of Great Gatsby uses symbolism to explain Toms action towards life. "Then there was a boom as Tom Buchanan shut the rear windows and the caught wind dead out about the room, and the curtains and the rugs and the two young women balooned slowly to the point." The things Tom did represents his actions against life and how he feels he doesn't need it.

  11. The author of "The Great Gatsby" uses symbolism to repesent many things for example when Murdock tells Tom to buy the dog for her , he just buys the dog with no hesitation. Another example is when Daisy tells Nick about the time she gave birth and how she said "She hopes her daughter grow up to be a beautiful fool."

  12. n the book "The Great Gatsby" the author uses the symbolism and metaphor to show that sometimes in life can always force or expect someone to be something they are not. In the book Daisy expects her daugther be something she not . In the quote"i'm glad its a girl. And i hope she'll be a fool thats the best thing a girl can be in this world a beautiful fool"
In this quote when she says she hopes she's her girl should be fool she wants her daughter to have more like her. But in the book many girls change in there life drastically and Daisy is expecting for her daughter to be beautiful.

  13. Literary devices are used in every text to represent something mayor. In this case, the Author of "The Great Gatsby" uses conflict to represent the true colors of all character. People tend to have two sides of them: the "fake" side & the "real" side.

The Author -using the character Nick- highlight the conflict he's trying to interpret to his readers. For example, Nick was raised with the mindset of not "criticizing any one" because, as his father advised him not "all the people in this world [have] had the advantages that [he'd] had" (P.1, L.4-6) Even though he was expected to follow this advice, both Nick & his father were snobby. They thought of themselves superior to those who "a sense of the fundamental decencies [was] parcelled out unequally at birth." (P.2 , L.6-7) In other words, those people who were "dumb" & had no type of moral did not deserve their attention; the absolute contrary of what they were supposed to be following, their "belief".

  14. symbolism plays a big part in the book "The Great Gatsby".A major symbol that appears a lot is colors.Different colors represents different meanings for each character in the book such as as white which represents purity, green which represents nature and red which represents blood.

  15. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to establish a larger meaning and understanding towards his characters in "The Great Gatsby". He does this by referencing different colors that represent each individual character. Each color symbolizes an aspect of life, which is associated with different characters in the book, in order to promote a larger meaning and greater understanding of the book.

One example of symbolism in the book is in chapter 1, where at the end of the chapter a green light vaguely hints Mr. Gatsby's personality. On chapter 1, page 21 states, "Involuntarily I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness." This statement gives a hint at Gatsby's personality as the color green is associated or symbolizes life and this is therefore associated with Mr.Gatsby as when Nick sees him he also sees a green light. The significance is undeniable: it could be assumed that because the color green is associated with Mr.Gatsby, he is a person bursting with life and hope, in contrast to other characters in the book. He is an exuberant person in his own way. This concept is a perfect example of how the distribution of symbolism through colors is used to present a large meaning of the book, as Mr. Gatsby himself, or his actions, is a recurring driving force in the book.

  16. In "the Great Gatsby" the author uses symbolism to show a larger meaning about the characters and there feelings. When nick first moved to New York he rented an house in west egg but he feels that west egg is home to the new rich those who, having made their fortunes recently, having neither the social connections nor the refinement to move among the East Egg set. So those who are new comers don't really have the same status ass everyone else even though there rich also. Many people are on way different levels even though they have money if you don't live in east egg you not on the same status as the richer.

  17. The author of "The Great Gatsby" uses white to show peoples power over innocents. Symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols. White means life and innocents. Color is a major symbol in this book.

The author uses Tom to show that he has power over innocents. In the room there were two girls, Daisy and Ms Baker, they were happy and dancing with the wind. The window was open and the fresh air was coming in, and the room was completely white. Then Nick and Tom came in and he shut the window and the happiness and fresh air died. The "two young women ballooned down slowly to the floor" both completely motionless.

  18. In the book " The Great Gasphy " , the author uses symbolism to show how true love takes a tole for better or worse , and explains the difference between both east & west. The only major difference between the two are all characteristics by color , size , wealth , etc. However Gatsbys love has left Daisy empty after he left to war. As she talks about Gasphy she says " it was an extraordinary gift for hope , a romantic readiness such as i have never found in any other person & which it is not likely I shall ever find again " (p.2). However Gatsby
sees a green light across the dock towards diasys east egg dock and points to it symbolizing that he might try to fight for diasys love , to reunite is his main goal.

Color nor size should matter in the east or west egg.

  19. In the book "The Great Gatsby" the author uses symbolism through color, representing Gatsby hopes and American Dream. The colored symbol he uses is the green light .The Green light was at daisy's east egg dock but it wasn't visible to see from Gatsby side but he needed to see it.
That light was important to Gatsby and it some how got daisy mixed in it.In Chapter 1 "he reaches toward the light in the dark as a guiding light that was leading him to his goal ".That goal got mixed with daisy because his quest for daisy was associated with his future dreams. Therefore the green light symbolizes his hopes as he is using it to guide him to his future dreams.
